In today’s dynamic and diverse workplaces, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), also known as diversity, equality, and inclusion, serve as fundamental principles. They guide organisations toward creating environments where migrant workers, or indeed global workers, are provided with equal opportunities. These workers can grow within businesses and thus contribute to their success. With the rise of globalisation, there has been a mobilisation of talent from various countries and linguistic backgrounds. As a result, the need for inclusive practices has never been more pressing.
A recent study from the Migration Observatory sheds light on the demographic landscape of the UK’s workforce. It reveals that foreign-born employees constitute nearly a fifth of the working population. This statistic underscores the significance of DEI for UK businesses with diverse workforces, not just for the inclusion of their migrant workers, but also for commercial success.
Multilingual training, often delivered via eLearning, serves as a powerful tool for advancing DEI within organisations. Offering training materials in multiple languages fosters inclusivity by ensuring equal access to information and resources through translated and localised materials. This fosters inclusion amongst all employees and levels the playing field for global and migrant workers. It promotes genuine equity by ensuring that no one has to overcome any ‘comprehension barriers’ when learning.
The effect of said barriers are numerous and impinge upon global foreign workers’ ability to engage with, for example, onboarding training, Health and Safety training, and upskilling training materials; This will negatively impact their induction, safety, and progression at work. These examples alone demonstrate how translated training documents and eLearning materials facilitate integration. Moreover, they show how these materials support wellbeing and progression amongst global workforces and diverse workforces.
Furthermore, research conducted by CSA indicates that a significant portion of non-English speaking workers who are highly proficient in English prefer content delivered in their native language. This preference highlights the importance of embracing multilingual training solutions to enhance DEI efforts within organisations, even when employees’ English levels are indeed ‘proficient’. Global and foreign workers are far more likely to engage with content that they ‘prefer’ and that they can see has been tailored to benefit their learning.
Investing in learning and development is crucial for addressing skill gaps. This is key to ‘futureproofing’ organisations and ensuring they remain competitive within a rapidly evolving business landscape. A report by Rosetta Stone also highlights how it can improve businesses’ overall productivity levels. The study also noted the significant impact of language barriers on companies, with executives complaining that miscommunications due to language barriers lead to inefficient communication and lower productivity.
To summarise, multilingual training plays a vital role in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within organisations. By embracing linguistic diversity and offering training solutions in multiple languages, businesses can upskill and safeguard diverse and global workforces. This approach enhances their DEI efforts and ultimately drives organisational performance.
